Angela Bofill became temporarily the hot latin-soul singer in the late '70s with her debut for GRP, but never broke through to mass appeal.

Between 1978 and 1985 she charted constantly on the R&B charts but never had a crossover hit on the Pop charts.

With a 3 1/2 octave range (holds a Bachelor of Music from the prestigious Manhattan School of Music where she was classically trained in opera), Angela has been singing since she was 4 years old - professionally since the age of 15. Her father is a Cuban and worked for bandleader Machito (one of the biggest figures in Latin Jazz), her mother is a Puerto Rican.

These roots may be the reason why her first records have strong Latin influences. Her voice is sultry and warm, she uses it mostly for phrasing and filing the lines with emotions instead of juggling with high notes (not to say she could not). That made her a natural interpreter for soothing R&B ballads. Before releasing her debut “Angie” in 1978 she was the lead soloist with New York's Dance Theatre of Harlem Chorus and has also performed with Dizzy Gillespie and Cannonball Adderly. Critics raved about this collection of R&B, Jazz and Latin songs.

Billboard enthusiastically mentioned: “Her voice is magnificent soaring soulfully and angelically into varying emotional shades. Underneath is music which fuses Jazz / R&B / Sou l/ Pop elements with some of the best session players anywhere.” In the 80s she worked with producers like Narada Michael Walden, The System and George Duke on several more urban, dance and quiet storm projects before losing commercial appeal when the decade ended. In 1983 she had her lone R&B Top Ten hit, the robotic “Too tough”, by now an early 80s Urban-classic. She returned to her jazzy and latin influenced soul in 1988 and releases in the 90s.

Over the next years she worked with such artists like Bill Cosby, Isaac Hayes and Peabo Bryson and released two albums in the 90s: “I wanna love somebody”(1993) on Jive Records and “Love in slow motion”(1996) on Shanachie Records, both to critical acclaim but unspectacular sales. Still they sold so good that they are both available. Angela is currently starring in the #1 gospel play in the USA „God Don't Like Ugly", performing her classic R&B hit songs “Angel of the night” and “This time I'll be sweeter”.

Sadly enough Angela is still very unknown today, of course much lesser than the years she was constantly on the charts. But while Angela is still performing more 80s material with smooth ballads and up-tempo tracks recalling that time, it's a hard to really win an audience which is enthusiastic about Contemporary R&B / Urban Divas like Destiny's Child or Faith Evans. Thankfully Arista released her first four albums in remastered sound on compact disc.
