The sighting led to James' first recording contract with Mercury. After that he spent four years as Sarah Vaughan's musical director. Eventually he became hooked up with Creed's CTI label and began writing and playing keyboard for almost every act on the label, including Grover Washington, Jr.
Working as director of progressive A&R for CBS Records for a stretch in the 70's, Bob ended up forming his own label, Tappan Zee.
Reaching number one on the jazz charts with his solo recordings for Tappan Zee, Bob James was named "Artist of the Decade" by Jazziz magazine.
You've heard Bob's work if you ever watched the hit TV program "Taxi", for which he created the theme music.
He has collaborated with Fourplay, George Klugh, David Sanborn and George Benson, among others and has most recently released "Flesh & Blood." The new record features a collaboration between Bob and his daughter Hilary.
