We've a huge diversity on this show to highlight the new and the old, the musicians from Brazil and the musicians from outside of the country who have been influenced by the rhythms. We've even included a crossover track with a near neighbour from Argentina from Brazil Tango and the lilting ' Tangostoro '. ( Not to be missed for fans of music time signatures ).
Our Featured Artist and Album on the show is saxman Leo Gandelman who is one of the country's leading musicians and also a TV host in his native country. We feature the well known ' Mas Que Nada ' and ' Mr Funk Samba ' from his excellent set ' Perlas Negras '.
On each show we have an album that we call THE ESSENTIAL COLLECTION and one we highly recommend that you add to your own Brazilian Music Collection. This time it is a compilation set called ' Red Hot In Rio ' and the two tracks featured are from the unusual pairing of George Michael and Astrud Gilberto with a cover of Tom Jobim's standard ' Desifinado '. The maestro himself drops by with Sting to perform a duet of one of his classics ' How Insensitive ', a song made even more famous by the aforementioned favourite daughter of Brazil, Astrud Gilberto.
Other Brazilian musicians featured include pianist and vocalist Eliane Elias who was formerly married to trumpeter Randy Brecker and she plays ' Barefoot ' from her ' So Far So Close ' set.
Watch out for husband and wife team Romero Lubambo and Pamela Driggs from the band Brazilia, the former joins up with Argentinian saxman Gato Barbieri for ' Boa Vista Drive ' from a sensational CD called ' Rio Wave '. Pamela fronts the 90's band Brazilia with a track taken from their ' River Wide ' collection called ' A Chamada Do Rio ', Pamela spent many years perfecting the Portugese language in Brazil.
Sergio Mendes guitarist Kleber Jorge brings us the title track from his wonderful ' Voltar Pro Rio ' CD and another guitarist Toledo brings us ' Bahia ' from his ' Mestizo ' album.
Another Carioca with a Brazilian pedigree is featured on two songs, Kenia, once with trumpeter Claudio Roditti on the much covered classic ' Nothing Will Be As It Was ' from Claudio's ' Red On Red ' set and once on her own from her award winning ' Kenia Celebrates Dori Caymmi ' and the song featured is the beautiful ' Doralice '.
One of Brazil's up-and-coming vocalists is Jorge Vercilo, watch out for his cut called ' Leve ' from his ' Perfil ' collection and guitarist extraordinaire Ricardo Silvieri performs one of my all time favourite Brazilian tracks with the stunning ' Francesca ' from his not-to-be-missed ' Storyteller ' CD.
Brazil has influenced so many artists around the world and this show highlights just a few from our 45 year old musical treasure-trove collection.
Enjoy Italian bands S-Tone Inc. with ' Beautiful Love ' and Bossa Nostra with ' Solaria ', German bands, Slowdown with ' Dia Do Sol ' and Bobby Brazil with ' Belem, Minha Cidade ' and Japanese bands Sugarcane with the haunting ' Summer Nights, Velas ' with ' Ilhas Dos Frades ', the very hard to find Feet with ' Fala De Amor ' and pianist Jun Miyake with ' Giraffe In Green '.
South African saxophonist John Smoot brings us ' Deus De Toda Criacao ' from his brilliant ' Journey To Brazil ' collection and France's Soulstance bring us the wonderful track ' Honesty ' from their ' Lifesize ' set.
American guitarist Eric Roberts spent some time in our neighbouring country of Switzerland and he wrote ' Swiss Samba ' as a tribute when he returned to the states, you can find that on his ' My Brazilian Heart ' EP.
I hope you enjoy the music as much as I do, I have carefully selected tracks which I think might be new to you. Explore a new musical trip to a world of golden sands, azure seas and exotic rhythms with ' Dreams Of Rio ', it's the perfect accompaniment to a hot summer's day.
