In 1998 he was awarded a scholarship which enabled him to come to the US to complete his graduate studies at the University of North Texas. Soon after graduating he began establishing a career as a saxophone and piano player.

He has performed at major jazz festivals in the US and South Africa and recorded as a sideman on several studio recordings. He was a featured performer for Beach Street USA and a side stage act for Earth Wind and Fire, Chicago and Queen Latifah. His jazz groups have performed at several major jazz festivals most recently at the Gretna Jazz Festival and the Virginia Arts Festival.

He has composed and produced original music for outdoor plays, radio and television. "Reminiscing" is his debut album as a solo artist. All tracks were composed and arranged by him and written for specific people and places. The album will be released on 21 September 2009 and available online and in stores.

Karen is also the founder and director of the South African Music Outreach Project, a project that establishes music programs for children in South Africa impacted by AIDS, crime and poverty.

Over the past few years he has shipped crates of music instruments, equipment, supplies and books to public schools in South Africa and spent time working with music teachers to establish concert bands. The South African Music Outreach Project is paving the way forward in South Africa for the introduction of instrumental music in the public school system.
