Atherton, whose vocal style has been compared to Minnie Ripperton, has also been described as a “smoother” David Sanborn and “funkier” Candy Dulfer on alto sax.
She has toured Japan, Monte Carlo, Portugal, the USA and Canada. Paula has performed with an array of artists such as legendary jazz pianist Hank Jones (Blue Note, NYC), pop star Michael Bolton, and has jammed with guitarist George Benson and the late pianist, John Hicks. Paula has also shared the stage with such notable musicians as Chuck Loeb, Johnny Pacheco, Patti Austin, Tito Puente and Najee.
Atherton’s freshman album “Let Me Inside Your Love” debuted on the national contemporary jazz charts in ‘04. In 2006, a cut from Paula’s debut album, “I Long For Your Love”, was released on Warner Europe as a piece the wildly popular compilation titled “Ladies of Jazz”. Natalie Cole, Candy Dulfer and Eliane Elias were also featured on the Album. Film and Television have played a vital role in Paula’s career. She has had musical excursions on Rachel Ray, Today, and Good Morning America with Michael Bolton.
Paula played a role as a bandleader for the Lifetime Network show “Girl’s Night Out” for 30 episodes, and wrote the Musical Score for the independent film, “The Definition of Insanity” in 2002.
Paula is passionate about music and insists on doing her part in strengthening music education programs in schools. Atherton along with her group have joined High School bands for interactive jam sessions, where they have practiced several songs, offering insights and tips on various elements of jazz with the students. Paula is also a contributor to the non-profit organization; Mr. Hollands Opus Foundation, which raises money and runs instrument drives to promote the growth of music education programs.
The official release of her new album, “Groove With Me”, with special guest performances by Chieli Minucci (Special EFX), Greg Adams (Tower of Power), Onaje Allan Gumbs, and Bill Heller (Rippingtons) is June 16th 2009.
