JazzNet247 Review by Wes Gillespie
After many years of producing music for other artists such as the UK's Shola Ama, Ambrosia's Dave Pack, Jeff Kashiwa and Steve Reid from the Rippingtons and also saxman Everette Harp, this funky multi-instrumentalist releases ‘ Desert Nights ‘ to showcase his own prowess on the other side of the recording booth.
Aided and abetted by a plethora of seasoned and long time befriended luminaries such as Tom Saviano, Stokley Williams, Dave Barry and the aforementioned Everette Harp, Shaun offers a menu of delights which fits right in at the pinnacle of a jazz sub-genre which has become monolithic and down right tedious at times.
No such problems here with a set which is dynamic and sophisticated in content and offers the listener a blend of instrumentation which weaves a spectrum of musical colour.
Songs like ' Desert Nights ', ' Down Low ' and ' Tomorrow ' caress the eardrum like an artist's magical touch on a canvas with up tempo driving tracks such as ' Spin Cycle ', ' Indio Sunrise ' and ' Palm Canyon Drive ' offer sax driven adrenaline to satisfy any Smooth Jazz music addict. ( Incidentally Jeff Lorber adds his unmistakable input in the remix of the killer cut ‘ Down Low ‘.)
The addition of the vocal track 'Stairway' with the sultry Desiree is refreshing and adds the final cherry to the icing of a excellent album.
The fact that Shaun plays many of the instruments on the CD not only highlights his considerable versatility but also emphasises his desire to portray the composition and delivery which he had planned on the storyboard for the songs. The synergy with the other musicians would lead you to believe that this was their ' everyday gig ' together and not just a group of musicians getting together to play on an album.
A wonderful CD to play in your car with the roof down for just chillin' and cruisin'.
