This multi-talented musician from the Philadelphia area has written, recorded and performed with some of the hottest artists in music today.
For the past year and a half, Stephen has been the horn section leader and arranger for the John Legend Band. Now playing trombone in the group, Stephen was originally the trumpet player and continues to double and even triple on sousaphone when needed. The horn section has performed with Legend across the globe and has been seen repeatedly on Jay Leno, Good Morning America, Ellen DeGeneres as well as other television specials for ABC and TVOne.
Before joining the Legend camp, Stephen played trombone with LL Cool J for feature shows that ran on the Oxygen Network and BET. Around the same time, he performed on the trumpet with legendary hip-hop band “The Roots” at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. An avid salsa fan, Stephen performed along side Jimmy Bosch with the Spanish Harlem Orchestra in 2005 at the LA Salsa Congress. Other people that Stephen has had the opportunity to perform with include Slide Hampton and Jeff “Tain” Watts.
Aside from playing popular music, Stephen is an artist in his own right. In 2006 he released his first jazz album entitled “Who Cares?”. It consists of original compositions of contrasting styles and features Tirpak’s virtuosic technique on the trumpet, trombone and flugelbone, a rare instrument that is similar to the valve trombone. For over a year, he performed weekly at Philadelphia’s premier jazz venue, Zanzibar Blue, as well as other notable places around the city such as, Penns Landing and The Kimmel Center.
