With a whole lot of work accomplished, Zé Luis has passed the incredible mark of 320 albums recorded as a studio musician in Brazil and USA. He also performed as a sideman with musicians like Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Bebel Gilberto, Ivy, Astaire/Blondfire, Grupo Miguelito, JJ Sansaverino, Rita Marley, Spearhead, Tania Maria, Banda Black Rio, Tom Tom Club, The Wailers, Milo Z, Ricardo Silveira, Passport German Jazz Band, Paulinho da Viola, Ney Matogrosso, Cazuza, Lobão, Mario Adnet and many other international artists, whose diverse styles expanded his range as a sax and flute player and inspired him as a composer, arranger and producer.
For seven years as a member of Caetano Veloso's band, Zé Luis has played at the Olympia in Paris, at the Montreux Jazz Festival and New York's Carnegie Hall, touring in Europe, North and South America, Africa and Middle East.
A French critic compared him to David Sanborn due to his performance on the soundtrack of the movie "A Subway to the Stars" (Rio Zone) directed by Carlos Diegues. The movie soundtrack was co-written by Gilberto Gil & Zé Luis. This Milan Record's soundtrack has seen very good sales, as well as great reviews in Cannes Film Festival and throughout Europe.
Residing in New York City since 1990, Zé Luis has been performing regularly with his own band. He has been composing and performing sound tracks for dance theater, broadcast news, documentaries and advertisement, and working as an arranger and producer as much as a recording session instrumentalist and sideman for various artists.
His latest projects includes: Produce and arrange strings for Ivy, produce and arrange strings, percussion and flutes for Astaire/Blondfire, produce and arrange for Grupo Miguelito, produce and arrange flutes for Ashby, produce and arrange for JJ Sansaverino, compose and produce the soundtrack of the documentary "En Rout To Baghdad" directed by Simone Duarte, record with Bebel Gilberto the new self titled album plus the soundtrack of the movie "View From The Top", Bebel Gilberto's musical direction for the record release of the acclaimed album Tanto Tempo (Six Degrees), Cafe com Leite with Simone (Polygram), Special Guest appearance on Tania Maria’s Outrageous (Concord Picante), Milo Z’s Basic Need to Howl released by Mercury (Polygram), Timbalada Dance (Polygram), Brazil A Century of Song (Blue Jackel), Maucha Adnet’s Songs I learned from Jobim (Venus Records) and many others.
